STARWBERRY is being cultivated in Bangladesh successfully. Due to strawberry cultivation, Aloasha Agrotech came very close to farmers. Hope in near future Aloasha Agrotech will meet the local seed demand of potato and also by developing and providing its other technologies such as seed priming, Aloasha Agrotech will help the subsistence and marginal farmers. Hope marginal farmers will get locally produced quality seeds for better crop production.

Not only this seed production or seed supply system but also Aloasha Agrotech is going to support marginal farmers through its own FARMERS TRAINING CENTRE.

Farmers and people are very much interested to taste and cultivate strawberry. 14 February is the valentine’s day which is the day for celebrating love and affection between intimate companions. First strawberry fair was arranged by Plant Breeding & Gene Engineering Lab (PBGEL) in front of third science building at RU in 2008 VALENTINE DAY and this year PBGEL is also going to arrange a strawberry fair at Rajshahi University campus from morning to evening. You will get detail information of strawberry, how it is being cultivated, how it looks like; you will see the fruits and plants of strawberry and you can also buy or taste the Bangladeshi Strawberry.

You are invited to the Strawberry fair and of course gather some information about strawberry that you can grow in your home at least.

Strawberry is a fruit of cold countries. We can’t imagine the availability of this delicious fruit in market through cultivation in a tropical country like Bangladesh. But now it became true that strawberry is cultivating in Bangladesh and which started its first trial at Rajshahi, the most hot climatic region in Bangladesh. Approximately 12 years research of Professor Dr. Monzur Hossain’s team, strawberry is now being cultivated in Bangladesh that was really unbelievable. Now it’s growing around in 35 districts in Bangladesh. The most important thing is just 2 years before it was not only impossible for poor farmers/people to taste strawberry but also unpredictable for them to cultivate in their land or in home garden. But it became true and now a lot of farmers and villagers are cultivating. Now-a-days, steps are going to be taken to make its commercialization and already few number of commercial companies promised to help AloAsah agrotech for commercialization of strawberry in Bangladesh. We strongly believe that in coming future; strawberry will be available in Bangladesh fruit market like Bangladeshi common fruit, not like imported one and I personally believe that will be helpful for the country economy and povert reduction.

Those days are not so far: Bangladesh will optimize all food demand by using its own agro-biotech system.

It’s really interesting that Aloasha school is going to be strongly financially supported by some income from strawberry plantlet and fruit marketing. It was very hard to establish a climate resilient strawberry variety in Bangladesh and now it is being cultivated whole the country, success came by the research group of Plant Breeding & Gene Engineering Lab, Dept. of Botany, University of Rajshahi, supervised by Professor Monzur and supposed to be commercially cultivated in near future. Now income from strawberry goes to the Aloasha school for its further development. So it will be possible to establish the dream behind the establishment of Aloasha school.

IDA (iron deficiency anemia), the most common nutritional disorder in the world, impairs immunity and reduces the physical and mental capacities of people of all ages. In infants and young children even mild anemia can impair intellectual development. Anemia in pregnancy is an important cause of maternal mortality, increasing the risk of hemorrhage and sepsis during childbirth. Infants born to anemic mothers often suffer from low birth weight and anemia themselves. An inadequate dietary iron intake is the main cause of IDA. According to UNICEF, nearly two billion people are estimated to be anemic and about double that number, or 3.7 billion are iron deficient, the vast majority of them women. In Africa and Asia UNICEF estimates that IDA contributes to approximately 20 per cent of all maternal deaths.

Potato is an important food and cash crop ranks third after rice and wheat in Bangladesh. At present potato is grown in about 200 thousand hectares for which country needs around 300,000 Mt. of seed potatoes yearly as of 2000-2001. There has been a remarkable increase in the area under potato production from 35 thousand hectares during late forties to 200 thousand hectares in the recent years mainly due to the introduction of modern varieties.

All most all-commercial potato varieties grown in Bangladesh despite their high starch content possess very little importance. Most of the potato varieties produce negligible amount of different vitamins, proteins and bio-available iron in the tubers consumed by humans. The amount of bio-available iron is dependent both on the level of dietary iron consumption and on iron absorption during the digestive process. Dietary iron in developing countries consists primarily of non-heme iron of vegetable origin, whose poor absorption is considered a major factor in the etiology of iron deficiency anemia. Also legume staples and grains, including rice, are high in phytic acid, which is a potent inhibitor of iron absorption. Foods that enhance non-heme iron absorption such as fruits and vegetables rich in ascorbic acid are often limited in developing countries. Heme iron, which is relatively well absorbed by the human intestine, is found primarily in foods containing blood and muscle. Due to their expense and lack of availability, heme iron-rich foods are often a negligible part of a typical developing country diet. Transgenic potato for different purposes was already developed such as human serum albumin production Cyclodextrin producing potato , amylose free starch containing potato .

In Bangladesh a major part of the population especially pregnant women is suffered from IDA. Potato is a most consumed vegetable here. Development of heme iron rich potato variety will definitely help to combat IDA and IDA related diseases among mass population in our country. IDA is a serious threat to public health in Bangladesh. This is because of lack of balance diet and ignorance about food nutrition among mass population. Potato is daily used common vegetable available throughout the year.
